Monday at Boys State was capped with our annual Alumni Night Ceremony, where a 25-year alumnus of the Boys State Program is honored, and shares his thoughts with those less "seasoned." This year, our own Ed Sargavakian marked his 25th Anniversary. Ed attended Boys State in 1983, when it was held at Clark University. He graduated from Waltham High School and went on to receive his degree in accountancy at UMass Amherst, after which, he entered the working world with what was then a "Big Eight" accounting firm (when there WERE eight) - Price Waterhouse. Ed has worked at Investors Bank and Trust Co., and now State Street Bank. He is our Dean of Elections, has been on staff since 1984, and is currently working with T2. Ed was joined by his wife Lisa and surrounded by his many Boys State friends.
Following Ed's anniversary address, Boys State was honored to be greeted by New England Patriots all-time great, former linebacker, and inductee into the Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 2008, Andre Tippett. Andre played with Patriots from 1982-1993 and still hold the team record for most career sacks. A five-time Pro-Bowl selection, and a member of the 1980's All-Decade Team, Andre spoke with Boys State citizens about his own story growing up in New Jersey. He spoke with fondness and passion about his old high school coach, and mentioned how he still calls him to this day on a regular basis - not because he tells Andre what he wants to hear, but because he tells him what he needs to hear. The unvarnished truth. Andre shared several stories with Boys State - how, surprisingly, he was cut by his junior varsity coach (something he never lets him forget); what it was like for a rookie starting out in 1982; and, some of the lessons he learned along the way.
Andre left Boys State after several standing ovations - a fitting send-off as he prepares his trip later this summer to Canton, Ohio for his Hall of Fame induction.
